Two-stage column generation and applications in container terminal management

چکیده
Seaport container terminals are source of many interesting large-scale optimization problems, which arise in the management of operations at several decision levels. In this paper we firstly illustrate a recently proposed framework, called two-stage column generation (Salani and Vacca, 2008), which is suitable for a particular class of large-scale problems, where the structure of the original formulation, namely the presence of a combinatorial number of decision variables, does not allow for straightforward reformulation. The main idea of their approach is to start from a meaningful subset of original variables, for which the problem remains feasible, apply the DW decomposition to this subset of variables, solve the resulting reformulation with standard column generation and then iteratively perform the explicit pricing on original compact-formulation variables, retracing back the reformulation and using complementary-slackness conditions. The two-stage column generation framework is suitable to be applied to the Tactical Berth Allocation Problem (TBAP) with Quay Crane Assignment, an integrated decision problem which occurs in the management of the quayside resources in container terminals. A compact formulation of TBAP has been recently presented by Giallombardo et al. (2008); in this paper, we propose a Dantzig-Wolfe reformulation of the problem and we show that standard column generation cannot cope with the pricing induced by such reformulation, because of the particular structure of the problem. It makes sense therefore to use two-stage column generation and we illustrate the application of the method to TBAP. Conclusions and future research directions are discussed.

Container Terminal Management: Integrated Models and Large-Scale Optimization Algorithms
This thesis deals with models and methods for large scale optimization problems; in particular, we focus on decision problems arising in the context of seaport container terminals for the efficient management of terminal operations. Large-scale optimization problems are both difficult to handle and important in many concrete contexts. They usually originate from real world applications, such as...
متن کاملA New Approach for Sequencing Loading and Unloading Operations in the Seaside Area of a Container Terminal
Due to the considerable growth in the worldwide container transportation, optimization of container terminal operations is becoming highly needed to rationalize the use of logistics resources. For this reason, we focus our study on the Quay Crane Scheduling Problem (QCSP), which is a core task of managing maritime container terminals. From this planning problem arise two decisions to be made: T...
متن کاملCost Function Modelling for Semi-automated SC, RTG and Automated and Semi-automated RMG Container Yard Operating Systems
This study analyses the concept of cost functions for semi-automated Straddle Carrier (SC), Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) and automated Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) container yard operating cranes. It develops a generic cost based model for a pair-wise comparison, analysis and evaluation of economic efficiency and effectiveness of container yard equipment to be used for decision-making by terminal pla...
متن کاملColumn Generation for the Container Relocation Problem
Container terminals offer transfer facilities to move containers from vessels to trucks, trains and barges and vice versa. Within the terminal the container yard serves as a temporary buffer where incoming containers are piled up in stacks. Only the topmost container of each stack can be accessed. If another container has to be retrieved, containers stored above it must be relocated first. Cont...

This paper investigates replanning strategies for container-transportation task allocation of autonomous Straddle Carriers (SC) at automated container terminals. The strategies address the problem of large-scale scheduling in the context of uncertainty (especially uncertainty associated with unexpected events such as the arrival of a new task). Two rescheduling policies Rescheduling New arrival...
